Yes. A Google Business Profile puts you on the map. It does not replace a website you own. Google’s representation guidelines (Business Profile Help, checked in September 2026) require a location phone number or a location website — not both. Google does not require the page for the listing to exist. Customers, after reviews, and chats that cannot see inside Google’s review garden, often do.
If you run a clinic, an office, or a trade in Romania, keep both: the profile for Maps, a site on your domain for copy, contact on mobile, and a URL that stays yours.
What does the Google profile do — and what does it not?
The profile (formerly Google My Business) is the card in Search and Maps: name, address, phone, hours, category, photos, reviews. Local ranking, Google says on the ranking help page (checked in September 2026), rests on relevance, distance and prominence. You cannot request or pay for a position. Prominence includes, among other things, how many websites point to the business and how many reviews you have.
What the listing does well: it puts you on the map, next to reviews and directions, for free, and it can take calls without anyone visiting a page of yours.
What it does not do:
- it is not a URL you own — it sits on Google’s rules;
- Google can suspend or change it under the representation guidelines;
- it does not appear as an organic page below the map; websites sit there;
- it does not hold a long text about services, starting prices, what you do not do, the emergency area;
- it is not a page you send in an ad or to a client’s partner;
- it is not, by default, what ChatGPT cites.
SEO Bandwagon’s sweep of 164,241 US businesses, week of 8 September 2026, finds that 84.4% of Maps-visible firms have a website; 15.6% do not. In positions 1–3, 89% have a site. Among plumbers, 17.3% have none; among dentists, 13.2%. These are firms already on the map, in the US — not a Romanian census and not a cause of rank. The direction still helps: businesses found on Maps usually also have a page.
Do I still need a website if Google does not require one?
Yes, because the guideline minimum (a phone number or a website, so the listing can exist) is not a strategy. It is an eligibility condition.
The site is a different product: your domain, copy you control, the place where name, address and phone match the listing, a page an answer engine can cite when it does not read reviews inside the Google account. WordStream’s Small Business Website Trends report, updated 24 March 2026, of more than 300 US SMBs, puts roughly a third of the sample without a site. Of those that have one, 94% call it at least somewhat important, and 69% a significant source of leads.
On LOLOTECH presentation websites that means €500 + VAT, one page, delivery in 3–5 working days. Care, €29/month, is optional. Without it, the site is still yours. Market ranges, not only this package: how much a small-business website costs in 2026.
What happens after reviews, if you have nowhere to send the person?
BrightLocal’s Local Consumer Review Survey 2026, published 11 February 2026 (1,002 US adults), finds that 54% of consumers visit the business website after positive reviews — up from 32% when the question was last asked in 2019. 66% research further; 34% are ready to buy or book. On the same page, BrightLocal notes that only 40% of local businesses have a dedicated website.
Without a page, the most common next step after a good review leads nowhere: the person read that you are good and has nowhere to see hours, area, a starting price, or a call button.
Will ChatGPT and Google AI find me without my own site?
I will not promise they will cite you. Nobody serious can guarantee that.
BrightLocal’s AI-trust write-up of 10 March 2026 (the same LCRS survey, 1,002 US adults) puts use of generative tools for local recommendations at 45%, up from 6% in 2025. ChatGPT was used by 31% for such recommendations in the last 12 months; Google AI Mode by 23%. 88% of AI users check whether a review is legitimate or what the source is.
Myles Anderson, BrightLocal co-founder, in the same March 2026 text: ChatGPT and other LLMs cannot see inside Google’s review garden. If your reputation exists only there, you are invisible to people who ask a chat.
BrightLocal’s local AI-sources study, published 26 August 2026 (~1.97 million citations, 1,355 locations in the US, UK and Australia, across Google AI Overviews, AI Mode and ChatGPT), shows two facts that do not contradict each other:
- Google Business Profile accounts for about 28.6% of citations (`google.com`). For AI Overviews and AI Mode, the listing is the primary source.
- About 93% of cited domains are individual business websites. Platforms dominate the top by volume; the long tail is your page.
- ChatGPT, in the same set, does not put the Google profile in its top 10. Yelp is first, appearing in 80% of answers.
Google AI reads the listing. ChatGPT, in this study, reads directories and, at scale, business sites. WordStream (24 March 2026) notes that most links and citations from classic search and from AI search still go to web pages. AEO and GEO are not a Maps plugin. They are the discipline of having facts in text, on a URL you own, identical to the profile. The rules, without jargon, are in the guide to a local business website in 2026.
An AI builder you rent is still rented ground, like the Google listing. When the rent is enough and when the domain is worth it: AI website builder vs developer.
What must match on the profile and on the site?
Name, address and phone — identical, character for character, including “Str.” versus “Street”. Hours, the real category, the area. On the site, in text, not in a photo. From the profile, a link to your domain, not to Facebook. Google requires the real name, as on the storefront, not stuffed with keywords, and that the Website field be the firm’s site, not a referral page.
If the three places (Maps, site, Facebook) have different phone numbers, Google has a bad signal. A chat has a contradiction.
When is the Google profile enough on its own?
It makes sense if you are testing a business name before the company papers, if you live on referrals and never send anyone a link, or if you have just verified the listing and are collecting reviews. It is not enough for a clinic on a ten-year horizon, a lawyer who wants a URL on the card, or a plumber who pays for ads and has nowhere to send the click.
What do you buy, exactly, if you want both?
Keep the profile. Complete it. Reply to reviews. Then put a page on your domain, with call and WhatsApp in three seconds, a map, a form, the same details as on Google, metadata and Search Console.
The structure I use for presentation websites: Home, Services, About, questions, Contact — on one page. €500 + VAT. 50% deposit, 50% on delivery. 3–5 working days after the deposit and after your details, address and photos. It does not include a shop, online booking, or branding from scratch.
If today you have only the listing, or an abandoned builder, a new site on your domain is usually cheaper than another year in which good reviews send people into a hole. See what a presentation website includes and ask for a concept on your firm.
Frequently asked questions
Do I still need a website if I have Google Business Profile in 2026?
Yes. The profile is free and necessary on the map. The site is the place you own, where you put services, area, hours and a call button, and where an answer engine that does not read Google reviews has something to extract. Google does not require a website for the listing to exist. Customers, after reviews, usually do.
Can I have a Google profile without a website?
Yes. Google’s representation guidelines (checked in September 2026) require a location phone number or a location website. The phone number is enough as a minimum. It is not enough as a strategy, if you want a URL you own and copy that can be read.
Does ChatGPT read my Google profile?
Do not count on it. In BrightLocal’s study of 26 August 2026, ChatGPT does not put Google Business Profile in its top 10 sources for local queries; Yelp is first. Google AI Overviews and AI Mode do read the listing heavily. That is why you keep both: profile plus site.
What must be identical on Maps and on the site?
Name, address, phone, hours and area — in text. A link from the profile to your domain. If they differ, Google and a chat see two firms.
How much does a website cost, if I already have Google Business?
The profile stays free. At LOLOTECH, a presentation page costs €500 + VAT, delivered in 3–5 working days. Care is €29/month, optional. The price does not include position 1 in Google or a mention in ChatGPT.
